Dear Friends,

This is usually a message you hear over the holidays and, of course, the holidays have long passed. But it is a special message for each of us who walk a spiritual path, and we need to remember it every day.

You cannot know where help will matter most, but giving help to anyone at anytime always matters. Reach out a hand and help every time you can, and don't look for thanks. God gives boundless blessings to cover everyone who gives. "Giving is the only living," Yogi Bhajan once told us, and this is how we as spiritual beings live.

Reach out a hand to a stranger standing on a lonely corner holding a sign, "Vet out of work, please help." Give him a dollar. Sure, you don't know what he'll use it for, but it doesn't matter. It brings hope.

Reach out a hand to help a kind soul whose story touches you - stuck in a job, long divorced, his brain feeling foggy and heavy, and thinking there's no place left to go but down. Offer him a small job you may have, a bite to eat, a few fresh ideas. Smile at him - the kind of smile that comes with twinkles in the eyes. It can make a difference.

Reach out a hand in love. We're coming up on Valentine's Day, and everyone wants to know who's going to give them flowers or candy or something else dandy. Reach out and give someone else flowers; in fact, give a lot of love and something dandy to several people you know. Giving love is so much more satisfying than waiting around to get it.

Reach out a hand of freedom. Teach someone a meditation who could really use it. The cosmos is huge and God is all around us - introduce them to both through meditation and prayer.

Reach out a hand with Reiki healing energy to uplift body, mind and soul, or teach someone the way to tap into the power of the breath of life given us in our yoga practices. You have such great resources from which to give. They're meant to be shared.

The point is simple: reach out and do something. You are spiritual beings who came to live in your heart. In a world torn by passions, your fire is fueled by compassion. Sure, you can give money to all sorts of causes - that's great. But when you can get up and get involved, you make a difference because you are the difference.

You walk a spiritual path, and that requires spirit. Now understand that the spirit of many people is lagging, and for some it is even dying. It only takes one small act on someone's part to help them up a notch or two. That someone could be you.

Bless you as people of spirit. Bless you when you reach out. Bless you even when you don't. People of spirit, your presence on this planet is a healing gift.
